Welcome

Welcome to Web Write-up, a new blog about trends in web design and development. I will be exploring ways the web is changing and what developers can do to keep their work looking fresh and modern. This is a place for anyone with an interest in web development, design, UI, or UX, to share thoughts and ideas on where web design is going.

I am a web development student studying at College of the North Atlantic and living in my home town, St. John’s, NL. I have a background in performance, circus, teaching, and visual art. I love reading, collaborative art, and learning new things. I hope that this blog can be a positive place where we can learn together.

In future posts I will be exploring trends relating to web design in more detail, however to kick things off I would like to take a brief overview of important trends that will likely continue to develop through 2020.

Current Trends

1. Minimalist Design

Flat design has been very popular on the web for a number of years. It it a minimalist take on design that purposely makes a website or interface look two dimensional, opting to minimize the use of drop shadow, borders, textures, and other tools that give the design a three dimensional look.

Flat design looks good a clean either on a computer screen or a mobile device, and it can help make navigation flow with the rest of a website’s design.

A new take on this trend is doing away with headers and footers and hiding site navigation to create an even cleaner looking site design.

2. Video

Video is a powerful tool in web design. A video can be very effective at grabbing a visitors attention and communicating a great deal to them without their having to explore the website. The downside to using video in web design is the tole it takes in load times. With users exploring the web on so many different devices and load times being so critical in keeping users on a website the power of using video must be balanced with it’s impact on loading a site.

Using video intelligently will likely continue to be a key way web developers ensure that their websites are a step ahead of the competition.

3. Custom Illustrations

Using illustration in web design is not new. Illustrations are popular on the web due to their ability to make a website instantly more fun and eye-catching. Moving forward, expect to see illustration and animation being used more throughout websites, rather than just once to catch attention.

Come Back Soon

That’s all for now, but come back for Web Write-up’s next entry, our first in-depth look at a web design trend that’s changing the web.
